The works I exhibit here are formed by manipulating an industrial material: sheet steel. There are two forms of manipulation: cutting and folding. Sculpture is "constructed" by providing three dimensions to a piece that is industrially intended to have two.
The concept of manipulating industrially supplied materials –I have even used chalks– is a recurring theme in my work. My training in architecture has been instrumental in the formal and intellectual aspect of my sculptures and the concept of simplicity has been decisive in the purely aesthetic facet of my work.
"Finding space within a space", as the philosopher would say, is a the basis of architecture and, most likely, of these sculptures. In his own words, Rafael A. Jiménez Jaén perfectly conveys the best description that could be given of his artistic pieces. The observer, by simply examining at length each one of his small-scale pieces, will come across a unique message, something that the sculptor aims for: for his work to speak for him. With clean shapes, flawless cuts and perfect volumes, his architectural pieces seek ultimate simplicity, a deliberate result that is accomplished thanks to the stainless steel finish. Their design and appearance seem so light, like the outcome of metallic origami, which give the impression of being able to be lifted in the air. Among his pieces, El Norte [North], Pareja [Couple] or Espacio Conquistado [Conquered Space], set the tone for how to initially approach and grasp his work.
